Festive Fun This Christmas In Halifax!

Halifax will play host to a wide-ranging programme of festivities this year, with the return of many people’s favourite Christmas events, performances and activities. The team behind the efforts, Halifax BID, has had the difficult task of juggling public entertainment with public safety, and the new Christmas programme reflects this.

As well as enjoying classics like the Elves Workshop, Painted Windows and Christmas Gifting Trees, visitors to the town centre will see a spectacular all-new lighting display illuminating the streets. Costumed cartoon characters will make appearances, while a variety of musical street performances will help add to the seasonal atmosphere.  BID’s annual Win the Window competition and Letter to Santa activity will run again this year, with chocolate giveaways too, thanks to BID’s collaboration with Quality Street – itself a Halifax brand.  One event not happening this year because of COVID safety is the big Christmas Lights Switch-on.  However, organisers insist that by spending this money on other Christmas activities instead, they will in fact be able to bring the festivities to a wider audience for a longer period of time.

Halifax BID Project Manager, Chloe McNeill, explained

“For months we’ve been consulting widely about what to do this Christmas, carefully considering the views and needs of residents, businesses and partner organisations as well as those of potential visitors to our town.  We decided to direct our precious resources at a broad range of activities and events which we’re confident will offer maximum public entertainment without compromising safety or proving divisive.  Many of the events we’ve booked are tried and tested favourites, but we’ve also got one or two surprises for people to look forward to, just to up the anticipation and add some freshness. Overall, it’s going to be fantastic, and as near as possible to a normal Halifax Christmas: that means one full of music, joy and traditional family fun, plus plenty of spectacle and excitement!”

Earlier this year, BID opened its very own information Hub in the Woolshops area of town.  Decorated as a Christmas grotto, this Hub will operate as an information base where the public can get event details, and it will also host the legendary Elves Workshop – for many children one of the highlights of Christmas in Halifax. Residents and tourists are encouraged to call in and say hello to the BID team in the run-up to Christmas.  Printed literature detailing Christmas events will also be available, and people can check social media or visit discoverhalifax.co.uk for all the latest news, photos and updates.
